Movie Set Lighting

Lighting for a movie set refers to the use of lighting to enhance the visual appeal of a set and to bring out the details of the set decoration. Here are a few things to consider when lighting a movie set:

  1. Mood and atmosphere: Lighting is a powerful tool for creating a specific mood or atmosphere on a set. It can be used to create a sense of warmth, mystery, or danger. These old explosion proof mining fluorescent lights from Ukraine are a perfect way to set the tone in any post-apocalyptic film, for example.

  2. Enhancing details: Lighting can be used to highlight specific details of a set decoration, such as artwork or architectural features. This can help draw the viewer's attention to these elements and make them more prominent in the shot. See this example of a 1940s Soviet light fixture that once illuminated factory yards.

  3. Shadows and contrast: Lighting can be used to create shadows and contrast on a movie set, which can add depth and dimension to the shot. Shadows can also be used to create a sense of mystery or intrigue. This old European factory light with hinged armature and multidirectional mounting can be used as a hanging pendant or wall sconce, creating dimension in a scene and the perfect contrast between light and dark. This Cold War Era light fixture has a similar effect.

  4. Practical lights: As mentioned before practical lights are lights that are part of the set decoration, such as lamps, and chandeliers, and are used to add realism and atmosphere to the scene. They can also be used as key, fill, back or rim light and are usually powered by the set's electrical power supply. You can see many examples on our Projects page. Some favorites of our clients would include these black industrial pendants or these old military trough lights.

  5. Gels and diffusers: Gels and diffusers can be used to change the color or quality of light on a set decoration. For example, a warm gel can be used to create a sense of warmth and coziness, while a diffuser can be used to soften harsh light and reduce shadows. Another example would be this old industrial warning light that comes with a red lens, which can convey a specific mood to the audience such as, danger or that something significant is about to happen.

  6. Dimmers: Dimmers can be used to control the intensity of lights on a set decoration, which can be useful for creating different moods and atmospheres. Any of the light fixtures in our current inventory can be fixed with a dimmer switch.

  7. Special Effects lights: Special effects lights can also be used to create specific effects, such as flares, smoke, or fog, to enhance the visual appeal of a set decoration.

Prop Hire and Lighting Rentals

Prop hire refers to the renting of props (short for "properties") for use in film, television, and theater productions. These props can include a wide variety of items, such as furniture, costumes, lighting, and more. Companies that specialize in prop hire for lighting, specifically, tend to have a large inventory of items available for rent, and they may also have the ability to create custom light fixtures for a specific production. Prop hire is an important part of the film and television industry, as it allows productions to obtain the specific items they need without having to purchase them outright.

  4. Schedule a visit: Some prop rental companies may allow you to visit their warehouse or showroom to see the light fixtures in person before renting them. This can be a good opportunity to get a sense of the quality and condition of the fixtures.

  5. Sign a rental agreement: Once you've found the right light fixtures and agreed on a price, you'll need to sign a rental agreement. This will typically include details such as the rental period, the cost, and any terms and conditions.

  6. Make payment and delivery arrangement: Payment will be required before delivery and rental agreement agreed by both parties. Make sure to plan for the delivery and pickup of the light fixtures to the set location.

Note that many prop rental companies may have different policies, procedures and pricing, It's always good to check with them before making any arrangement.
